Laminate flooring is a top option for homes due to the material’s durability and beauty. To keep your laminate in good shape, a regular cleaning and maintenance routine using the right products and tools is critical. Below is a brief guide to keeping your laminate flooring looking like new.

How to Clean Laminate Flooring

Regular Cleaning

laminate flooringThe first rule with laminate flooring is to avoid excess moisture. Make sure any spills, mud or snow tracked inside are wiped up immediately. Once moisture soaks in between the planks, expansion and contraction of the boards become an issue, which can loosen or warp your flooring.

To remove dirt, dust, and debris sweep your floor with a microfiber dust mop. This tool won’t scratch the laminate flooring and will pick up tiny particles of hair, and dust. Work in the same direction as your planks and use a vacuum cleaner hose or crevice tool to get into hard-to-reach areas and corners.

Deeper Cleaning

For deeper cleaning, begin by sweeping with a microfiber dust mop to remove surface dust and dirt. Push furniture out of the way so you can sweep up the dust bunnies lurking under couches and chairs.

Purchase a professional-grade hard surface cleaner that is formulated for laminate. Use a tiny amount of the solution on a microfiber cloth and buff in the same direction as the planks or tiles are laid. Reapply cleaner as needed, but do not saturate the cloth with too much moisture. Avoid waxes, polishes, and ammonia, and never use a mop. These items can ruin the finish. Also never steam clean laminate as the combination of heat and moisture can warp your flooring.

Once the floors have been wiped with laminate cleaner, dry the area with a clean, soft towel. This removes any leftover moisture and removes water spots, leaving behind a clean, beautiful surface.
