What You Should Know About Root Canal Aftercare , Anchorage, Alaska

If you have an infection or damage deep within a tooth, your dentist may recommend a root canal. This procedure can eliminate the need to have the tooth pulled. Proper aftercare ensures you get the best possible results following and spares you unnecessary discomfort. Here’s what you should know.

How a Root Canal Is Done

Before your root canal, the dentist will administer a local anesthetic so you don’t feel any pain during the procedure. They’ll use a tiny drill to access the inside of the tooth after cutting away the top portion.

Next, they use a small file to clean out damaged and diseased pulp—the soft tissue inside the tooth. An antimicrobial solution may be applied to kill off remaining bacteria. Once the inside of the tooth is clean and dry, it is filled with a rubber-like material and the opening is closed with a temporary filling.

What to Expect After the Procedure

root canalSchedule someone to drive you home after your root canal. Although you will likely only require local anesthesia, this spares you the stress of driving.

Expect some swelling, which should be addressed with over-the-counter anti-inflammatories and pain relievers. Have soft foods such as soups and yogurt prepared at home, as chewing may be uncomfortable.

It’s normal to have swelling and even bruising for a few days following your root canal. Brush your teeth gently, especially around the treated area. Depending on the nature of your job, you may want to schedule a few days off work.

Your dentist will schedule a follow-up appointment. Mark this in your calendar so you don’t miss it. If you experience unusual symptoms—such as fever, which could indicate an infection—before this date, call your dentist to schedule an immediate visit.
