Halloween is just around the corner, which means it’s time for jack-o’-lanterns, spooky costumes, and tasty treats. As a parent, you want your child to have fun during the holiday, but stay safe as well. Traffic combined with late hours make the streets dangerous for preschool kids. Stick to the following safety tips to have a fun, incident-free Halloween.

How to Stay Safe on Halloween

1. Be Vigilant When Driving

Drive with extra caution on Halloween, especially in neighborhoods. You never know when a child might run into the street. Keep distractions at a minimum, drive slower, and stop for longer periods at intersections to watch for children. Also, back out of driveways and parking spaces slowly.

2. Make Your Child Visible

Many costumes are dark to match the theme of Halloween, but unfortunately, this makes them harder to spot as the sun goes down. Put reflective tape on your child’s costume or treat bag to make them more visible to passing cars. For added fun, give them glow sticks to wear as bracelets or necklaces.

3. Walk With Caution

preschoolJust like drivers, trick-or-treaters should be extra vigilant on Halloween. Always look both ways before crossing the street, and teach preschool children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Don’t run in the street, and keep distracting electronic devices safely tucked away. Check obscured driveways for cars backing out before walking past.

4. Trip-Proof Costumes

Preschool kids might look adorable in oversized costumes, but save those for indoor parties or photos. Big, bulky, or flowing costumes can be cumbersome. Masks can also obscure vision, making your child more prone to tripping over uneven sidewalks or rocks. You don’t want them to fall and hurt themselves. Give them costumes that fit and choose face paint over masks for trick-or-treating.

5. Supervise Kids

Younger children, particularly those from preschool to elementary school-age, should never go out by themselves. Swap rounds of supervised trick-or-treating with a spouse or trusted adult. By the age of 12, kids should be responsible enough to trick-or-treat in a group of friends without supervision.

With a one-day event like Halloween, it’s easy to accommodate your kids’ wishes and plans. But if you work full-time, you may not have the time to oversee your young children on a daily basis. To have them learn and grow during the day while you’re at work, bring them to Seagull Schools. Since 1971, the early childhood center has offered outstanding preschool and day care programs for families in Honolulu, HI. They promote exploration, hands-on learning, and healthy habits through physical activity. With a low student-to-teacher ratio and encouraged parent participation, your child will receive the attention and encouragement they need to thrive.
