When your child has tooth decay, your pediatric dentistry provider may recommend a dental crown or filling. These restorations will protect their delicate enamel while avoiding both infection and future tooth removal. After your dentist performs the treatment, you can follow these tips to help them recover and ensure their crown lasts for years to come.

Pediatric Dentistry Tips for Dental Work Aftercare

1. Let Them Rest

While your child may not need general anesthesia, it’s always helpful to encourage rest after a dental procedure. Allowing them to take a nap or watch cartoons on the couch will keep them occupied until the local anesthetic wears off. If necessary, make plans ahead of time so they can take the afternoon off from school.

2. Prevent Injuries

This will prevent them from chewing or biting their numb tongue or lips. When they tell you they are no longer numb, give them something easy to eat, like mashed potatoes or soup.

3. Treat Sensitivity

Your child’s teeth and gums may feel uncomfortable for several hours to a few days. An over-the-counter pain medication made for children can help to reduce their sensitivity. Ask your pediatric dentistry professional about which one they recommend, especially if your child is allergic to certain medicines. You can also provide them with an ice pack for 15-20 minutes as long as it’s wrapped in a cloth or rag to keep it from being too cold.

4. Continue Brushing & Flossing

Cleaning the treatment area will prevent the development of an infection. Consider helping your child with brushing and flossing for a few days until they feel better. Consult your dentist for any additional care tips specific to the type of dental work your child received.

5. Avoid Sticky Treats

Once your child feels better, continuing with a proactive oral hygiene routine will help keep their dental work intact. In addition to regular brushing and flossing, keep them from eating sticky foods. These include taffy, caramel, and fruit snacks. If they feel like they’re missing out, offer them fresh fruit or a smoothie.
