An important part of dog grooming is knowing when to keep your pup’s hair long and when to cut it shorter. While hair trims are not always necessary for dogs with shorter coats, it helps to keep those with longer fur more comfortable during certain times of the year. The guide below will explain when a haircut can be beneficial.

When to Cut Your Dog’s Hair

Your dog’s coat helps it to stay warm in the winter and cool during the summer. However, some breeds require additional help to regulate their body temperature. Those with very thick coats can struggle to keep cool during the hot summer months, so trimming it can be a necessary dog grooming task during this time. However, it’s important to leave at least one inch of hair to protect against sun burns. Also, cutting too close can result in embedded hairs, which will prevent new hair growth and could lead to skin problems.

If your dog has a double coat, it’s probably wise to avoid a haircut. During the summer, these breeds shed their thicker undercoat to allow air to circulate near their skin. Since their overcoat doesn’t continue to grow like single-coated dogs, it can be problematic to cut or shave this hair.

How to Transition Between Lengths

dog groomingIf you have a dog that has continuously growing hair, it may be necessary to keep it trimmed year-round. However, as you get closer to the colder months, leaving it longer can help them to stay warm, so you should decrease the number of cuts they receive leading up to these months.
If your pup is primarily an inside dog, you can do away with cuts altogether during this time by providing more thorough home dog grooming. Brush them daily to prevent tangles and matting.

If your dog is outside a lot and prone to getting wet, don’t skip the visits to your groomer. They can effectively remove knots that could attract pests or make your pet’s skin uncomfortable.
