5 Most Common Dog Vaccinations, Waynesboro, Virginia

Vaccinations are the key to ensuring your dog won’t contract preventable diseases. Of course, there are a lot of pet vaccines out there, and not all of them are a necessity. The best way to find out what’s right for your pet is to discuss their needs with your veterinarian. In the meantime, this helpful guide will explain the most common vaccinations dogs receive.

The Most Common Vaccines for Dogs

1. Distemper

Canine distemper is a highly contagious airborne disease that affects the respiratory, nervous, gastrointestinal, and immune systems. There is no known cure, and it is generally fatal. The vaccine is often combined with others as a single vaccination known as the DAPP (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus).

2. Adenovirus

Adenovirus type 1 causes canine hepatitis and is spread through contact with urine, excrement, and saliva. Dogs with this infection experience fever, swelling, abdominal pain, and exhaustion. Hepatitis attacks the liver and liver in kidneys, sometimes resulting in death. When your veterinarian administers the DAPP vaccine, your dog will also be protected against adenovirus type 2.

3. Rabiesveterinarian

For the sake of public health, rabies vaccines are required by law in most states. The viral infection is capable of infecting all mammals. Once bitten by an infected animal, the virus affects the entire central nervous system. Rabies almost always results in fatality, following a series of gruesome symptoms, including brain infection. Vaccination from a veterinarian is the only method of prevention.

4. Canine Parvovirus

Puppies in particular are highly susceptible to canine parvovirus due to underdeveloped immune systems. This illness is spread through exposure to contaminated feces, and those affected experience bloody diarrhea and intense dehydration. Parvo vaccines cover all forms of the infection and are included in the DAPP.

5. Lyme Disease

Unlike the above examples, the vaccination for Lyme disease is not a core vaccine. Your dog’s need for it depends entirely on your pet’s location and lifestyle. This bacterial infection is transferred through tick bite, so it is strongly recommended in areas with large populations of ticks and high rates of Lyme disease. Your veterinarian will likely suggest administration if you live in New England, Virginia, or the Upper Midwest.
