Typically, brushing twice a day and flossing daily, along with regular visits to the dentist, will keep cavities at bay. However, some diseases can make patients more susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. Patients with one of these conditions should talk to their dentist about taking additional preventative measures.

4 Diseases That Are Bad for Your Oral Health

1. Cancer

People undergoing chemotherapy are vulnerable to many oral complications, from infections to dry mouth. Those with head and neck cancers who are undergoing radiation treatment are susceptible to mouth sores and tooth decay. People undergoing cancer treatments should consider extra dental cleanings and fluoride treatments.

2. Eating Disorders

Healthy teeth and gums require proper nutrition, and individuals with eating disorders can develop vitamin deficiencies. Iron, Vitamin B, and especially calcium are key to oral health because they strengthen teeth against decay. Frequent vomiting associated with bulimia can also erode the enamel that protects teeth.

3. Diabetes

dentistPeople with diabetes are at an increased risk of gum disease because of their susceptibility to infection. Diabetes also causes dry mouth, which contributes to tooth decay since there isn’t enough saliva to rinse away bacteria. If you have dry mouth, rinse with alcohol-free mouthwash at least once a day.

4. HIV/AIDS

HIV and AIDS weaken the immune system, which plays a key role in preventing tooth decay. In fact, one-third of HIV patients will experience a major oral health issue. Your HIV medicine may be causing dry mouth, so ask your doctor for possible alternatives, and visit your dentist for regular appointments.
