When it comes to transporting goods for your business, finding the right freight company can make all the difference. However, no matter how experienced and conscientious the transportation company is, there’s always a risk of damage to the shipment. Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to reduce the risk of damaged shipments. Below are a few tips to help.

4 Tips to Reduce the Risk of Freight Damage

1. Pack Items Well

Poorly packed items are the first to be damaged in transit. When packing boxes or crates, make sure the container is the right size for the items inside. Using boxes that are too small or too large puts the items inside at risk for impact damage. Then, thoroughly pad the items inside the box with packing paper, peanuts, bubble wrap, or other material to cushion them.

2. Seal the Boxes Tightly

FreightUse a wide packing tape to cover the box seams completely. This will reinforce the boxes and keep all items inside where they belong. Avoid using other materials like duct tape, masking tape, or glues as they won’t adhere to the boxes as reliably as a purpose-made packing tape.

3. Label the Load

Regardless of the size of the freight load, make sure the items are clearly labeled. Include the types of items you’re shipping (fragile, flammable, etc.) as well as the destination of the load. Try to use as few labels as possible to reduce confusion for the trucking company.

4. Load Pallets Carefully

When loading pallets, the right strategy can help reduce the risk of damage. Place larger and heavier boxes on the bottom of the pallet and load lighter fragile items on top. Make sure each box fits securely on the pallet and work to reduce the number of boxes hanging out over the edge of the pallet. Then, wrap the pallet securely with packing plastic. This will keep the boxes from shifting in transit.
