The American flag is a lasting symbol that plays a significant role in government institutions, the military, and everyday life. You’ll find it utilized for solemn ceremonies like funerals, and to inspire hope and patriotism, like on the Fourth of July. There are key points of etiquette that need to be followed when flying the American flag. This will ensure you properly display and respect the flag so that everyone can enjoy it.

3 Points of American Flag Etiquette

1. When to Display It

The U.S. Flag can be displayed any day of the year, but flying your flag during inclement weather can shorten its life span. It’s to be taken down after sunset, unless it’s illuminated at night, and should be raised again at sunrise. There are several days throughout the year when it’s most important to display the flag, including Inauguration Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day.

2. How to Display It

The flag length ideally should be 1/4 the length of the pole if it’s a ground pole.  It should cover about half the length of a house-mounted pole, and half to two-thirds of a stern-mounted boat staff.  When hung vertically, the stars should be on the upper left. On vehicles, it should be secured to a staff, and the flag should never share a pole with another country’s flag.  Lastly, it should never touch the ground or have anything else placed on it.

3. How to Hoist and Lower

When hoisting the flag, do so quickly, but lower it slowly as a sign of respect. If flown at half-staff, it should be raised all the way to the top and then brought down. Over time, the flag may tatter and become damaged. When it’s time to replace it, burning it is preferred, which can be done by local scout troops or veterans’ services and associations through a special ceremony.  You can retire your old flag with Harbortown Flag when you visit them to pick up your new one.
