Medicare is a national health insurance program provided for people 65 and older administered by the U.S. federal government. This form of social services also provides health insurance for some younger individuals with certain disabilities and chronic illnesses. For many of these patients, home health care provides access to the medical services they need with as much comfort and convenience as possible. If you have Medicare and are wondering which in-home services may be covered, discover some options below.

5 Home Health Services Covered Under Medicare

1. Home Health Aide

When a person’s medical condition or age makes tasks such as bathing, dressing, and other daily activities challenging, a home health aide can help. Limited home health care may be covered under Medicare Part A if the patient is homebound or they are recovering from a hospital stay.

2. Skilled Nursing

Individuals in need of treatments such as injections, wound care, and medication management to treat a specific illness or injury can receive financial reimbursement under Medicare. Depending on your condition and whether you have Medicare Part A or B, you may be eligible for 28 to 35 hours of care per week.

3. Skilled Therapy

social servicesPhysical, occupational, and speech therapy services are eligible for Medicare coverage when medically necessary. This allows patients to receive treatment from a licensed therapist to gain mobility and strength, perform daily tasks with greater ease, and relearn language skills following an injury or illness.

4. Social Services

Not to be confused with the umbrella term “social services” which offers government-provided financial assistance for those in need, Medicare may also pay for services your doctor prescribes to support your social and emotional well-being. These social services could encompass counseling or community resources.

5. Medical Supplies

Finally, Medicare will pay for certain medical supplies in full, such as catheters and wound care supplies, when a Medicare-certified agency has provided them. Medicare may also cover a portion of the cost for mobility equipment, such as walkers.
