On particularly hot summer months, it’s easy for most people to keep the air conditioner running all day. While this is usually fine if your unit is regularly serviced and maintained, AC problems can often occur without notice. While most problems can only be solved by an expert, it’s often better to observe any sudden changes in the unit’s performance to catch them early and prevent future issues.

When Should You Repair the Air Conditioner?

1. Warm Air

When you notice the AC is starting to blow warm air, stop using it immediately; this can only worsen the problem. Warm or hot air could indicate an issue with the compressor or a leaking refrigerant.

2. New Sounds

What air conditioners are known to make noises, if you notice any changes in the sound your unit makes, such as grinding, it may be time for a replacement. Sounds often indicate an internal problem that could get worse over time if the unit isn’t fixed or replaced.

3. Weak Airflow

4. New Smells

A new or odd smell coming from your air conditioner may be due to a burnt-out wire. Musky scents indicate mold on the ducts and coils or growing bacteria in the system. Stop using the unit and call a professional to avoid getting yourself or your family sick.

5. Excessive Moisture

While the AC unit is constantly pulling air in and out of your home, it uses a complex system of coils to convert hot air into cooler air. While water or condensation is not a sign of a problem, water leaks lasting more than a day are unusual. Common causes of this problem are dirty filters or a broken condensate pan.
