Back pain is the number-one cause of disability around the world, and half of all American workers experience it in any given year. Considering how widespread this issue is, and the strong odds that you may deal with it at some point, knowing some steps to relieve back pain is a smart idea. Below, a few of the more common ways to address this problem are discussed in more detail.

Apply Ice or Heat

Both ice and heat have been shown to be effective in treating back pain. Test out both options, and see which works best for you. Heat causes the blood vessels to expand, which increases oxygen to the area and prevents back muscles spasms; simply apply a hot water bottle or a heat wrap to the area. Cold works in the opposite way by causing the blood vessels to constrict and blood flow to decrease, which may reduce painful inflammation; an ice pack is an easy way to reap the benefits of cold therapy.

Rest

Take it easy for a day or two after you notice back pain. Try to lay on your back for around 48 hours, then start to introduce mild to moderate movement as you are able. Don't rush into major movements or heavy-duty exercise right away. See what your body can handle without pain, and don't push it.

Take an Over-the-Counter Pain Reliever

See a Chiropractor

One of the single best ways to treat back pain and get to the cause of the issue is to see a chiropractor. A chiropractor will give you a comprehensive exam that tests your range of motion, identify any problem spots, and provide chiropractic adjustments and other treatments as necessary. When you see a chiropractor, you will not only treat the symptoms, but you'll also address the problem head-on.
