When the air is frigid outside, you won’t want to drop everything to deal with an HVAC emergency. By taking care of a few essential tasks, you can ward off problems and keep your home comfortable. Here are a few HVAC tasks you should take care of before winter hits, and how an HVAC contractor can help.

Essential Fall HVAC Tasks

1. Reprogram Your ThermostatHVAC contractor

To save money, you might program your thermostat to stay on the warm side during the summer months. But when the temperature drops, your efforts will be counterproductive, since your heating will turn on more than it is supposed to. During the fall, reprogram your thermostat for winter weather. If you are not home during the day, you can set your thermostat to 60 degrees, but Forquer Heating does not recommend going much lower than that.

2. Change Your Air Filters

If you notice your system is cycling longer than usual, the air filters could be the issue. The system’s air handler—a component that physically moves the air throughout the home—and the furnace rely on a steady flow of air to keep the system running properly. To help push clean air through, HVAC contractors recommend changing the filters at least once every 30 to 60 days; however, those with allergies should lean more toward every 30 days.

3. Schedule a Tuneup

Over time, the components of you system can become worn and damaged, creating extra noise inside the furnace. Eventually, these failed components can interfere with the system, resulting in heating failures or carbon monoxide leaks. To prevent problems, have a professional HVAC contractor conduct a full system tuneup to look for parts that need to be replaced.
