With Halloween approaching fast, everyone who has braces wants to know if they can still have their favorite treats. The good news is that it’s okay to enjoy your loot, as long as you consume the candy in moderation. Here’s what you should know about how to keep sugar from harming your braces and teeth.

What Types of Candy Should You Eat?

BracesChocolate is one of the most popular kinds of candy on Halloween—and it’s also one of the safest to eat. Be careful with larger pieces, breaking them up into smaller bites as needed. Luckily, most of your favorites come in fun sizes. Chew those delicious morsels slowly and avoid chocolates with nuts when possible. Also, choose candies that melt or dissolve in your mouth easily.

What Candy Should You Stay Away From?

Hard Candies & Lollipops are tempting, but can damage brackets. Taffy, caramels, and popular fruit chews can easily get stuck between teeth and braces. Trade these candies for peanut butter cups or chocolate bars, if possible. Remember, taking care of your brackets and wires will keep your treatment on track so you can  enjoy more treats sooner, rather than later.

How Can You Avoid Decay?

Before you go to bed, remember to brush and floss your teeth. Spend at least two minutes cleaning all sides of your pearly whites—and use a water flosser or floss threader to get under the braces. It also helps to drink a glass of water before you go to sleep. If a piece of candy remains under your braces or stuck in your teeth the next day, try to floss it out again.

While kids and teens with orthodontic appliances must be careful to protect their mouth and teeth, it’s always important to have fun on Halloween.
