Fire alarms protect buildings and their inhabitants from smoke and fire dangers, but some homeowners fail to install enough alarms or place them in necessary locations. Fires can spread through modern homes faster than ever, largely thanks to furnishings made from manufactured materials. That’s why smoke detectors and their placement are essential to home safety. Consider these tips for keeping your property and family safe.

5 Rooms for Fire Alarm Placement

1. Inside & Outside Each Bedroomfire alarms

People are most vulnerable when they’re asleep, which is why having a fire alarm in each room where a person sleeps is crucial.  Additional alarms should also be positioned outside but near the entrances of those bedrooms, too.

2. In Living Rooms

Whether you call it a den, living room, or family area, your primary living space also needs a fire alarm. If your home has a stairwell near the living room, it should also have a smoke detector.

3. In The Kitchen

As expected, your kitchen needs a fire alarm. Its placement is just as important – fire alarms should always be installed at least 10 feet away from cooking appliances. Otherwise, you risk tripping the alarms each time you cook.

4. In The Basement

At least one smoke detector should be located in the basement. The primary alarm should be positioned on the ceiling at the bottom of the stairs leading up.

5. In Bonus Rooms

Many homes contain bonus rooms that also serve as recreational areas, offices, or gyms. Whether the room is located in a transformed attic, basement, or spare room, fire alarms should be positioned not more than 12 inches away from the ceiling, away from windows and doors.
