Having an electrician install an electric car charging station in your home has the potential to increase your home’s value while making it easier for you to keep your electric vehicle running. Electric vehicles are growing in popularity, and most plug-in electric vehicle users prefer to charge their cars at home. Special equipment is needed for the task, so hire a licensed electrician to install your charging station.

Installing an Electric Vehicle Charging Station in Your Home

Special Equipment Is Needed

electricianThere are two ways to charge your electric car at home. You can install  Level 1 electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) or Level 2 EVSE. Level 1 EVSE uses a 120-volt AC plug, and while it only requires a three-prong outlet, that outlet must have a dedicated branch circuit. Not all electric vehicles are compatible with a Level 1 setup. All electric vehicles are compatible with Level 2, which uses a 240-volt AC plug. Special charging equipment must be installed, and a dedicated electrical circuit of 20 to 100 amps is necessary to accommodate a Level 2 system.

Hiring an Electrician

Depending on the electrical wiring in your home, an upgrade might be necessary. A licensed electrician can inspect your home’s electrical panel and determine if the existing wiring is adequate to handle charging your electric car through either a Level 1 or Level 2 station. An electrician can also install dedicated circuits if required. Most charging stations are installed in the garage where they are protected from the elements, but outdoor charging stations are available, too.
