Women should begin having a yearly mammogram around the age of 40, depending on heredity and personal risk factors. If you’re over 40 or have a family history of breast cancer, consider starting this annual, lifesaving habit this October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Why Do You Need a Mammogram?

A mammogram can detect cancer before you or your doctor can through a breast exam, and early detection can save your life. The doctor may be able to offer you more treatment options, and according to the American Cancer Society, early detection is the most important way to prevent death from breast cancer.

This will help a radiologist make comparisons in the future as you continue to get yearly mammograms. If you change physicians, make sure the past results are transferred to the new doctor.

About 10% of women who have mammograms need to schedule further testing, but this does not always mean they have cancer. The doctor is just being thorough by ordering additional testing, such as biopsies.
