Before you go on vacation, it’s important to prepare your home. In addition to leaving on some lights and canceling your newspaper, you should check on your plumbing system to avoid problems when you return. Here is a simple plumbing checklist to complete before you head out.

How to Avoid Plumbing Problems While You're Away

1. Have Any Leaks Repaired

Even a minor faucet leak will waste water and cost you money while you’re away. Worse, a pipe leak can cause property damage and mold growth. Have any leaks, even minor ones, repaired before you head out.

2. Disinfect Toilets

plumbingWhen they aren't used regularly, toilet bowls can accumulate algae or mildew, which could cause stains. To prevent this from happening while you're away, clean your toilet and pour a cup of bleach into the bowl to disinfect the water. After doing this, avoid flushing the toilet.

3. Lower the Temperature on the Water Heater

Shut off or lower your water heater’s temperature. You’ll avoid wasting energy and save money on your utility bill. When you return, give your home’s water time to reheat fully before using it.

4. Turn Off Sprinklers

Turn off your sprinklers before you leave. If you don’t shut them off, you could end up with a colossal water bill. Additionally, you could drown your plants and turn your lawn into a swamp.

5. Turn off The Main Water Valve

Turning off the main water supply valve for your house will help you avoid wasting water if a pipe leaks. You can normally find the main valve in your basement or on a wall inside your utility room.
