Folks it’s time to get your yard ready for winter. We should be getting our first frost here in central Arkansas around the end of October or first of November, But this is Arkansas. Go ahead, if you haven't done so, and apply a mixed fertilizer like 13-13-13 at the rate of about 100 pounds per acre. This will give your lawn the nutrients needed to prepare and survive the winter. If you haven't applied any lime to your yard you may want to do so at this time also because it takes time for lime to start working and it will be ready for your lawn’s growth next spring. You may want to think about putting out a premerge herbicide if you usually have problems with weeds during the winter. I would plan on putting this out soon but be sure to read the labels and get one that will work with your type sod the read and follow the directions or you can get one of the local lawn services to do this for you. I have no idea the cost of this service. For those of you who have Saint Augustine in your yards, remember to leave your grass as high as the mower will go for the winter. This will help protect it from possible freezing out here. Also if it has been extremely dry and we are going to get a hard freeze it is a good idea to water any yard but especially Saint Augustine as the water will help protect it from the extreme temperature drop.
