1. “Trenchers” In The Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages, people used thick pieces of stale bread as makeshift plates for cooked vegetables and meats, creating the first open-faced sandwiches. Most did not eat the thick slices of bread, which were known as “trenchers” at the time.

2. The Name Comes From an Earl

sandwichesIn 1762 John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, requested meat served between two slices of bread so he could eat without interrupting his card game. His name became attached to the meal, as people soon began ordering food “the same as Sandwich.”

3. Hawaii Includes The “Sandwich Isles”

Famous explorer Captain James Cook named some of the Hawaiian islands the “Sandwich Isles” in honor of his patron, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. He named other islands for his sponsor as well, including Montague Island off the southeastern coast of Australia.

4. The Burrito Debate

The popular meal comes with many “borders” these days in addition to bread, including wrap and gyro options. There has even been a debate about whether a burrito qualifies as a sandwich — it was legally ruled as such in New York, but not in Massachusetts.
