Ghosts, goblins, witches and ghouls—Halloween is when these spooks all come out to play. For loving pet owners, however, the scariest thought of all is that something could happen to their cat or dog on Oct. 31. The holiday poses some unique risks, and these extra pet care precautions can help keep your furry family member safe.

5 Halloween Pet Care Tips

1. Keep Pets Away From Candy

Cats and dogs are at risk of chocolate toxicity because their bodies can’t break down theobromines—a caffeine-like substance found in chocolate—like human bodies can. Consumption can lead to heightened heart rate, seizures, and even heart failure, so lock sweet treats somewhere out of reach.

2. Beware Cute Costumes

3. Keep Decorations Pet-Friendly

Some Halloween decorations can prove dangerous for curious cats and dogs. Fake “spider webs” can pose a choking risk, for instance, while jack-o-lanterns might make for a fire hazard. Avoid such decorations and opt for battery-operated tea lights to illuminate your pumpkin.

4. Lock Animals Safely Inside

Many kids play pranks on Oct. 31—some of them, like those involving firecrackers, could be dangerous for animals. Keep your cat or dog inside on Halloween night. If you will be opening the door regularly for trick-or-treaters, it’s best to have the animal locked in a separate room so they can’t dart outside.

5. Update ID Tags If Needed

Even if you take the above pet care precautions, it’s a good idea to be prepared if your pet does run off. Make sure their ID tags and microchip are updated. If your cat or dog does get loose, this increases the odds of their safe return.
