Landscaping is a great way to add value to your property, and building a walking path through your garden can put a beautiful charm on your yard. Not only will visitors have a clear path to different spots on your property, but it can also protect your grass and other landscaping features. If you’re considering a walking path onto your property, follow these steps.

Install a Walking Path in 6 Steps

1. Clear Your Path

Where do you want your path to lie? Outline the boundaries of your walking area, then remove all weeds and other vegetation in that location.

2. Add Sand

Once your designated area has been cleared away, lay down two inches of sand to help level the area. To make sure everything is at the same height, drag a 2x4 piece of wood over the sand and keep an eye out for any spots that need to be filled in or reduced.

3. Place the Stoneslandscaping

Once your path is level, place the stepping stones in your preferred design. Avoid placing them too far apart, which increases the risk of tripping. Just a small buffer between each stone makes for the most organic look. Make sure your layout is comfortable by walking on it after laying everything down, making adjustments as necessary.

4. Level Your Path

Once your stones are laid out in the exact walking pattern that you want, check that they’re level and settled into place. Use a construction level to make sure that no adjustments need to be made.

5. Include a Weed Barrier

To keep your path free of weeds and other types of growth, place a weed barrier on top of your path. You’ll need to use scissors in order to cut holes for each stone. For lightweight barriers, you might need to weigh down the sides with pebbles to keep it from flying away.

6. Add Natural Materials

For an added touch, fill in the spaces around your stepping stone with natural materials like bark, pebbles or other materials. Make sure this accent is slightly lower than the stepping stones while also completely covering your weed barrier.
