With the holiday season approaching, you’re likely preparing to welcome a slew of loved ones through your entry door. However, the cold wind of the coming months is not as welcome. To keep your friends and family comfortable and your energy bills reasonable, it’s important to inspect the entries to living space for possible air leaks. With the help of the following tips, you can avoid drafty front doors for good.

How to Avoid Drafty Entry Doors

1. Replace the Weatherstripping

While the door might provide an easy way in and out of the house, it doesn’t account for the seemingly insignificant spaces around the frame. This is where weatherstripping comes in—adhesive rubber strips that can be secured around door and window frames to block air from seeping in small crevices. Over time, rain, wind, and the opening and closing of the fixture will cause the weatherstripping to deteriorate, sometimes developing cracks or holes. Luckily, the replacement process is simple, and will block cold air throughout the winter.

2. Hang Insulated Curtains

Block this by installing a small curtain rod on the top of your door and hanging thick, weighted curtains. Not only will this keep your home warmer, but it will also afford you more privacy.

3. Add Foam Tape

When it gets truly frigid outside, the weatherstripping may need some help doing its job. Luckily, you can find foam tape at most home improvement or hardware stores. While adhesive on one side, the tape is cushioned with various thicknesses of foam, which will serve as a second line of defense in blocking cold air seepage. Simply feel around your door for the coldest parts and apply the foam tape accordingly. If you installed curtains, this will conceal your insulation job, so you don’t have to worry about making it look nice.
