From washing clothes to taking showers, a reliable hot water heater is necessary to maintain comfort and home efficiency. If you continuously require water heater repairs, upgrading the appliance could save you money in the long-run. To make more an informed decision, below is a brief look at the differences between traditional water heaters and on-demand systems.

Traditional vs. Tankless Water Heater Systems

Traditional Systems Keep Hot Water in Storage Containers

With traditional fuel-fired and electric water heaters, the water is preheated and held in a cylindrical reserve tank until needed. Water supply and delivery pipes are installed on the top of the tank. With electric systems, the drop in temperature alerts the thermostat to trigger the heating element. Fuel-operated appliances typically use natural gas or propane to power the burners under the vessel.

The storage tanks typically hold up to 80 gallons of preheated water at one time. The containers are typically made of steel and contain magnesium anode rods to prevent corrosion. Tanks are also insulated to curb heat loss. Traditional water heaters take up space, which is why they are often installed in basements and laundry rooms. As a safety precaution, traditional water heaters come with temperature-and-pressure relief valves. If the valve opens, call a water heater repair technician for help, as the temperature or pressure has exceeded safe limits.

Tankless Models Heat Water as Needed

If you are tight on space, consider installing an instantaneous water heater. Unlike traditional systems, the liquid isn’t stored in a holding tank. Instead, cold water flows through a pipe, where it’s heated in the unit by gas or electric heating elements before exiting. Two to five gallons of water are heated per minute, so you won’t have to worry about running out. The appliances are often installed in homes with lower water consumption, as the tankless heater might not be able to accommodate several people taking showers, washing dishes, and/or doing laundry all at once. The units are often mounted on walls or tucked away under cabinets to conserve space.
