Any electrician will tell you that you need the appropriate fixtures for efficient and comfortable lighting, but the right bulbs are just as important. With incandescent bulbs being phased out, the most popular options for consumers nowadays are compact fluorescent light (CFL) and light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If you're unsure about which one to use, here is a brief explanation of their advantages and disadvantages.

A Basic Guide to CFL & LED Bulbs

Compact Fluorescent Lights

With their distinct coils, CFLs are easy to spot in any hardware store. Compared to incandescents, they can be up to four times as energy-efficient and 10 times as long-lasting. They're widely available in a variety of sizes, color temperatures, and wattages, so you won't have a hard time finding the right bulb for your lamps.

However, it's worth noting that CFLs do contain a minuscule amount of mercury in them, so when they burn out, you need to dispose of them properly. Never throw them in the trash. Ask your local hardware store or electrician about nearby CFL recycling programs.

Light-Emitting Diodes

electricianFor maximum energy-efficiency, LEDs are the way to go. Previously, they were commonly found in holiday lights and toys, but are now popular for standard home use. Like CFLs, many options are available.

LEDs are more expensive than CFLs; depending on the fixtures and number of bulbs you need, the cost could quickly add up. However, they are longer lasting, so they're more cost-efficient in the long run.

When deciding where to put these bulbs, keep in mind that they’re considered "directional" light sources, so they're better for recessed and task lighting than they are for ambient lights. If you want to use them for ambiance, have an electrician install LED strips in strategic areas.
