If you love gardening and landscaping but find it difficult to keep your plants healthy in overly sunny, dry, and windy climates, it can be frustrating. Luckily, plenty of plants have adapted to survive in these conditions—notably, many native to Hawaii. If you’re looking for beautiful, easy-to-care-for plants that will keep your yard looking great, check out the following native Hawaiian plants at your local nursery.

3 Hawaiian Plants That Hold Up Against the Elements

1. Aalii

This indigenous flowering shrub grows in different climates all over the Hawaiian Islands. Its name is derived from the first settlers of Kauai, whose warriors expressed its resilience in their phrase, “I am an aalii shrub; no wind can push me over.” It enjoys plenty of sunlight and minimal watering and is perfect for placing around rock features or as the dominant shrub in a landscaping bed. The flower colors range from yellow to green, pink, and maroon, and its roots help with erosion control on grades and slopes.

2. Carex

Their long blades provide plenty of movement and texture—especially in wind—and their tiny flowers come in a range from light brown to orange. They thrive in both sun and shade, need little watering, and remain rooted in high winds, which is why you’ll find them in a variety of environments. They’re often used in flower arrangements you’ll find at a nursery, and you can take some of those design ideas to pair carex with other plants in your garden.

3. Akoko

Akoko grows well as both a low ground cover plant or larger shrub and is easy to shape. It’s most commonly found in coastal areas and is ideal if you want to create an oceanside-inspired landscaping display at your home. It’s tolerant of sun, wind, and drought, as well as pests, ensuring you’ll get lasting use from it even in the most inclement weather.
