Before you begin shopping for diamonds, it’s important to take time to do your research to ensure you get the best value for your dollar. Luckily, research is easy if you use the memorable rule of four Cs. Diamonds have four essential attributes – the four Cs of carat, color, clarity, and cut – that play a role in determining quality, rarity, and price. Here’s a quick primer on each of these four factors.

4 Cs of Diamonds, Explained

1. Carat

diamondsThe first of the four Cs stands for a diamond’s “carat.” The carat is the standard unit of measurement for all gemstones and describes total weight, not overall size. The carat refers to the weight of a loose diamond before it’s placed in a setting. The carat size is primarily what determines how much a diamond will cost. Most commercially available diamonds range between .25 and 5 carats, and the higher the carat, the higher the price.

2. Color

Color – or lack thereof – is another characteristic of diamonds. Because diamonds are prisms, colorless diamonds are prized for allowing the broadest spectrum of colors to shine through. Diamonds with hints of brown or yellow coloring limit the spectrum and are thus considered lower grade.

3. Clarity

The third of the four Cs is clarity, which is determined based on how many microscopic impurities diamonds contain. Since these flaws can often only be seen with a microscope, clarity is generally less important to the average consumer looking for a diamond ring or necklace. However, diamonds can have larger impurities visible to the naked eye.

4. Cut

A diamond’s cut describes the way the diamond was shaped to allow reflective light to shine through. Inexperienced diamond cutters will sacrifice diamond brilliance in favor of size, making minimal cuts to sell the largest diamond. Reputable diamond cutters understand that the perfect cut is essential to creating a polished and symmetrical diamond.
