Osteoporosis can be a debilitating condition. As your bones weaken, they’re more prone to breaks, and you may lose height or experience other side effects. Bone density testing is the preferred method to check for this condition, and it’s important to know what to expect if you have an upcoming procedure, as well as how to prepare. The guide below, along with your radiologist’s instructions, will ensure the best results.

What’s the Purpose of Bone Density Testing?

During the process, a doctor measures how many grams of calcium and minerals are in a certain area of bone where osteoporosis is expected, such as the spine and hip. They check to see whether bone density is decreasing, as well as where you’re at risk of breaks. Common reasons for testing are recent fractures, long-term use of medications that can hinder bone-rebuilding, following an organ or bone marrow transplant, or having hormonal complications.

How Is Bone Density Testing Done?

bone density testingDuring the procedure, you’ll lie down on a table while an X-ray arm passes over areas your doctor is concerned about. This can last between 10 and 30 minutes. For tinier bones at the end of your skeleton, such as fingers or heels, a smaller, portable machine may be used. The results are measured in T- and Z-scores; the former compares your bone density against healthy levels, and the latter reviews the number of standard deviations from where it should be.

How Do I Prepare?

Bone density testing requires very little preparation. Wear comfortable clothing that doesn’t have any metal on it. Avoid taking calcium supplements 24 hours before the test and let the radiologist know if you’ve had contrast injections for a CT scan, as they may interfere with imaging.
