As a woman’s body goes through the miraculous process of pregnancy, there are many ways to support the healthy growth of her baby. Full-term pregnancies range from 37 to 42 weeks and are divided into three developmental phases called trimesters. While your obstetrician will offer specific guidance, learn some of the best pregnancy care advice for yourself and your baby in each trimester below.

3 Phases of Pregnancy Care

1. First Trimester

The first trimester, which lasts from week 0 to week 13, is a critical early period of development for your baby. It’s therefore essential to attend your prenatal visits and follow pregnancy care instructions from your obstetrician. In your first trimester, you’ll take steps to protect your baby that you should continue over the course of your pregnancy. Cut down on caffeine, eat healthily, and avoid substances hazardous to fetal development, such as alcohol and mercury. If you smoke, now’s the time to quit. Ask your doctor about taking prenatal vitamins. While nausea is common during this phase, some women find that eating small, frequent meals and sticking to bland, easy-to-digest foods like crackers alleviates this problem. Most importantly, be kind to yourself and get plenty of rest.

2. Second Trimester

The second trimester, which lasts from week 14 until week 26, is an exciting time – it’s when you’ll likely experience your baby’s first movements. Many women also find their first trimester symptoms subsiding. However, the second trimester brings new challenges, too. Increased back soreness is common during this phase as your belly continues to grow. If you experience swelling of the feet or ankles, invest in comfortable footwear. Begin sleeping on your side, and if pregnancy aches develop, book a massage to address soreness.

3. Third Trimester

As your baby rapidly gains weight and your uterus expands, there’s a good chance you’ll feel increased pressure on your bladder or bowels, so give yourself the flexibility needed to make frequent bathroom visits. Many women report experiencing heartburn, sleep issues, breast tenderness, and hemorrhoids during this phase. Continue your progress visits with your obstetrician, who will suggest dietary or lifestyle changes to mitigate any symptoms you experience. Take childbirth and breastfeeding classes to prepare for the arrival of your baby.
