Being able to slow down or stop your car at a moment’s notice is the best way to prevent fender benders and deadly collisions on the road. That’s why it’s important to schedule regular brake inspections with a qualified mechanic. To better care for your car, here are a few signs there could be serious issues with the brake system that need to be addressed by a professional immediately.

3 Indicators It’s Time for New Brakes

1. Brakes Make Squealing or Grinding Noises

Although a car will never be completely silent when the engine is running, you shouldn’t hear a loud commotion when pressure is applied to the brake pedal either. If you hear a squeaking or squealing sound, moisture from rain, condensation, or dew might have accumulated on the rotor. This causes rust to form on the surface. When the rotor turns, pads scrape the rust, causing the odd noises. If brake pads are worn, the rotor disc will make direct contact with the caliper. A grinding sound is caused by the friction of the metal rubbing together.

2. Brake Pedal Vibrates

Pasco-Washington-brakesIf the brake pads are worn, damaged, or covered in oil and dirt, the pedal could vibrate when the pads press against the rotor. The brake pedal could also vibrate if the rotor is unevenly worn. When pads connect with thinner sections, the rotor will shake, causing pulsations in the pedal.

3. Car Pulls to the Side

If the car veers to the left or right when braking, a problem with the calipers could be to blame. When you press on the brake pedal, calipers apply pressure to the brake pad. In turn, the pad rubs against the rotor, causing the wheels to stop moving. Cars typically have two to four calipers. If one is stuck or broken, the car could pull to the side when braking.
