Planting trees on your property enhances its value and aesthetic. But, before you begin, you’ll need to determine where to place them. Doing so requires several considerations, from the type of plant to assessing the potential dangers. The arborists at Carlos Tree Service in Anchorage, AK, explain three factors to consider.

Arborist’s Guide to Tree Placement

1. Tree Species

There are thousands of tree species, each of which has distinct needs for water, sunlight, and space. Some are crossbred to remain small, while others will grow taller than your house. Take these factors into account before planting to make sure it will thrive. Also, think about their fruit and flowers and what animals these might attract. For instance, if you add an apple tree, you may need to put up a deer fence too.

2. Aesthetics

An arborist can help you group them strategically for a rural orchard or enchanting woodland look. Planting along the boundary also delineates the property in a way that is more welcoming and beneficial to the environment than a fence. Before starting, consider the width and foliage height, and remember that background trees should ideally be taller than the roof.

3. Plumbing & Foundation Location

Tree roots can damage your plumbing and septic system, including the tank and drain field. Find these elements and avoid planting anything with extensive root systems too close. Over time, their growth may infiltrate the area, making the water drain faster than it should. They can also penetrate pipes and the septic tank, causing leaks. If you’re not sure where your tank is, use a metal detector and mark the edges with small stakes. Choose small trees that will grow less than 30 feet tall and place them at least eight to 10 feet away from the house. Medium-sized ones must be at least 15 feet away, and large trees at least 20 feet to avoid plumbing and foundation issues.
