Now that storm season has started, it’s important to make sure that you, your family, and your pets are prepared. A little prep work goes a long way, especially when emergencies strike. To help your family prepare, Liberty Veterinary Hospital has gathered some great pet tips for emergency and evacuation.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recommends getting and posting an emergency pet alert sticker to your front door. The sticker lets emergency services know what types of pets you have, how many, and the name and phone number of your vet. You can order a free sticker from the ASPCA here.

Another great way to prepare for an emergency is to create an Evac-pack. The American Humane Association recommends you keep these ten things in your pack:

  • Food (enough for 7 days)
  • Bottled water (enough for 7 days)
  • Leash and collar
  • Bowl(s)
  • Photo of your pet/ID and a photo of you with your pet
  • Medications your pet needs
  • Immunization/vet records (keep both updated)
  • Pet carrier
  • First aid kit
  • Contact list of pet-friendly hotels, vets, boarding kennels and facilities, local animal American Red Cross, American Humane Association and out-of-town friends/family

If you have a cat, it’s also important to bring a disposable litter tray (aluminum roasting pans work great) and litter or paper towels. If you have birds, reptiles, or other small animals, please check out these additional considerations from the ASPCA.

When making your Evac-pack, remember to update it annually. It’s important to swap out old food, water, and medication, as well as vet records, photos, and emergency contact information. Also, make sure you keep the pack located next to an exit in case you need a quick evacuation.

Liberty Veterinary Hospital offers both emergency and non-emergency services, including pet boarding, pet surgery, and pet nutrition. To learn more, please call them at (513) 755-9700 or visit them online.
