The new IOS 12.0.0 just came out along with 12.0.1.  12.0.0 would be an Upgrade.   12.0.1 would be and Update.

Upgrading to a new iOS® on your iPad® and iPhone® is always a good thing. I usually wait a week or two before I do it, so I can have other people upgrade and tell me if they like it.  

I dislike having to change to the new iOS® on mobile devices, but it is good to do to make sure everything works well.  Your iPhone® and iPad® will thank you for the updates and upgrades and will run smoother.

If you find problems with your iPhone® or iPad® after an upgrade, try a soft reset.  This usually takes care of most problems.

Updating your current iOS is always a great thing to do.  All it does is fix problems, or bugs.  Always do this.
