In the world of cosmetic dentistry, few things are as misunderstood as veneers, crowns, and the differences between them. While they are both designed to be placed on teeth, they ultimately serve different functions. Here are a few of their differences.

Veneers

Veneers are primarily a cosmetic dentistry solution used to hide your teeth’s aesthetic flaws. Minor imperfections, such as small gaps, stains, chips, cracks, and misshapen teeth, can all be remedied with a veneer. Made of porcelain or composite resin, they’re extremely thin coverings that are applied to the front surface of your tooth. A veneer is permanent, and it’s shaped and tinted to appear similar to your natural teeth.

After your initial consultation, the dentist will shape your tooth and file away some of the enamel to make room for the veneer. They’ll take a mold of the shaped tooth, which gets sent to a dental laboratory where your veneer is custom-made. After the veneer is trimmed to fit the shape and size of your tooth, your teeth will be cleaned and given a rougher surface, helping the dental cement stick when the veneer is applied.

Crowns

veneerUnlike a veneer, dental crowns serve both cosmetic and general dentistry purposes. Composed of metals, porcelain, or ceramic, crowns fit over your entire tooth, restoring both appearance and function. They’re used to strengthen, protect, or repair weak teeth or cover a tooth that’s been eaten by decay. Crowns are often used to support dental bridges and cap dental implants and can be used cosmetically to cover discoloration or misshapenness.

When it comes to the procedure, more of your tooth has to be removed for a crown. Your tooth will be filed down on all sides, and any cavities or damaged tissue will be cleaned out. Once the tooth is prepared, a mold will be taken of it and sent to a lab that will make your crown. When it’s ready, it will be sealed in place with dental cement.
