Your kitchen countertops handle a lot of abuse every day as you cook and eat on them, and most homeowners will deal with a stain at some point. When something gets into the stone and stains it, you’ll need to act quickly to remove it without damaging the stone. For the best result, target the blemish based on the type of stone it’s in.

Guide to Removing Stains in Kitchen Countertops

1. Granite Countertops

Granite should be highly stain-resistant assuming you get it sealed every year or so. The sealing should keep the stain at the surface, so wipe it down with some mild soap and warm water. If this doesn’t remove the stain, mix a paste of baking soda and water, then rub it into the stain with a soft cloth and cover it with plastic wrap. Let it sit overnight before wiping it away with a damp cloth.

2. Quartz Countertops

graniteQuartz is one of the hardest countertop stones out there, so it should be easy to keep in like-new condition for many years. Any stains should be wiped away with a soft cloth, warm water, and a mild soap. If you prefer, you can use a specialized cleaning solution for quartz to bring out its color and shine.

3. Marble Countertops

Marble is gorgeous, but it is softer than granite and quartz. Professionals recommend sealing it every three to six months; make it closer to three for light-colored marble. Blot up any spills right away by applying light downward pressure. Wiping it around will only spread the spill and risk creating a larger stain. If some mild soap and warm water won’t remove all the blemish, then call in a professional to buff it out.
