A warm, lasting campfire starts with picking quality, seasoned firewood. But not all wood burns well or offers the same heat. Learning about the different types of firewood allows you to choose one that makes for an enjoyable, relaxing campfire.  Below are some hardwoods to inquire about at your local firewood delivery service for your next bonfire.

What Wood is Ideal for a Bonfire?

1. Maple

Considered an ideal firewood, maple is abundant and easy to find in most regions. Its high density makes for substantial heat that burns easily and produces intense flames. One downside to maple, however, is that its hardness makes it difficult to chop or split, especially if you do it on your own.

2. Oak

Low moisture in the wood allows it to burn for prolonged periods of time, ideal for making toasty campfires on a chilly night. Oak is available in most regions across the U.S., and is easy to get through most firewood delivery services.

3. Ash

Unlike maple, ash is easy to split and saw. It’s considered by many tree experts to be the best type of firewood since it burns easily even when it’s green. Ash holds minimal moisture so it doesn’t produce a lot of smoke while creating plenty of heat and luminous flames.

4. Hickory

Another great firewood, hickory produces warmer flames than other hardwoods, such as oak and maple. Like ash, it retains little moisture so it produces less smoke when it burns. It also has a pleasing smell when seasoned well, making it ideal for outdoor cooking.

5. Cedar

When you’re building a campfire to last through a cool fall night, cedar is ideal. It produces small flames but provides excellent heat and lots of crackle. Like hickory, it also gives off a distinct, sweet aroma when burned. Small pieces of cedar can be used unseasoned, but burns better when dry.
