Water and sewer installation typically occurs with new construction. It’s also appropriate for older homes, especially if you notice signs that the system is failing. To help you identify when your system is in need of replacement, follow the guide to common causes of problems below.

3 Problems Warranting New Water & Sewer Line Installation

1. Freezing Lines

Alaskans know that the extreme cold of northern winters freezes pipes. If your pipes are exposed or run along exterior walls, they need to be insulated in rubber or fiberglass. If you find that your lines have frozen despite this insulation, call for assistance. Freezing often results in cracking or bursting, and if the damage is severe enough, you may need to replace your lines.

2. Root Systems

Root systems are incredibly tough and often puncture underground piping as they grow. When severe damage occurs, the old plumbing networks are often a total loss and completely new water and sewer installation is required. Your contractor may recommend including growth inhibitors or deflectors to protect your new pipes.

3. Mineral Buildup

If you see a bluish-green or white crust on your faucet or showerhead, you likely have a mineral buildup. This issue occurs as a result of hard water. Minerals present in hard water, such as calcium, accumulate in the interior of the pipes and block the passage. Eventually, the pressure from the amassed materials damages the lines. If the damage is extensive enough, you’ll need entirely new water and sewer installation.
