Many of today’s professionals work at a computer all day, reporting symptoms of blurry vision, dry or tired eyes. While working at a computer, you blink half as often as you would otherwise, causing your eyes to become dehydrated. Reading text off a screen and experiencing the flicker of electronic devices can also strain eye muscles. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to practice basic vision care during the workday.

How to Protect Your Eyes From Digital Eye Strain

Change Computer Display Settings

Most modern computers allow users to adjust the monitor display, so take advantage of this flexibility. To ensure better vision care, lower the brightness, make the display warmer, and make the text larger. When the computer is emitting less blue light from a dimmer screen, you won’t experience as much strain on your eyes.

Take a Break

You may also consider taking 15-minute breaks to go for a walk or stretch. In addition to this, refrain from using your cell phone during your lunch break and after work. This will give your eyes a much-needed rest.

Wear Computer Glasses

Talk to your eye doctor about computer glasses, which filter out blue light from screens. It’s also important to ensure that these glasses have a prescription if necessary, so your eyes don’t suffer further strain.

Adjust Your Office Lighting

Your computer screen should not be brighter or much dimmer than the lighting around you. Adjust your office lighting to match your desired monitor brightness. By doing so, you should feel more comfortable looking at your screen.

See Your Eye Doctor

In addition to all of these preventative measures, it’s still important to make an appointment with an eye doctor for a comprehensive vision exam. If you have concerns about eye dryness, tiredness, or pain, be sure to bring these up at the appointment. The eye doctor can recommend vision care steps to protect your eyes.
