When your dentist says you need a root canal, you may experience some anxiety. You’ve likely heard about this procedure but might not understand exactly what it involves. Fortunately, by learning more about root canals, you can know what to expect and arrive at your appointment feeling less nervous. The following are some of the most common questions about this procedure.

Frequently Asked Root Canal Questions

Why Do I Need a Root Canal Treatment?

A tooth’s root canal consists of the narrow spaces that go through the roots of the tooth, or the area containing the pulp. When a root canal gets infected, starts to decay, and becomes inflamed, your dentist will recommend a root canal treatment. The dentist will remove the decaying or infected tissue, disinfect the inside of the canal, and replace the tissue with biocompatible material. You will then have a healthy tooth.

Will the Procedure Be Painful?

root canalsSince your tooth is infected or inflamed, the tissue is more likely to be sensitive. This is often what causes discomfort during and after the procedure. However, dentists will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area during treatment. You may feel discomfort, but the dentist will control the pain. They will also give you instructions on managing your pain during recovery.

What Is the Aftercare Like?

Your dentist will likely recommend that you eat soft foods, avoid chewing with the affected tooth, and be gentle when brushing. You will eventually have a permanent filling or crown placed, but remember that the tooth is sensitive and unprotected in the meantime. Your dentist will likely recommend that you take anti-inflammatory medicine like ibuprofen in the days following treatment.

Could the Root Canal Site Get Infected?

Since a root canal treatment involves an opening, there is a risk of infection. However, you can prevent infection by keeping the area clean through gently brushing, flossing, and swishing mouthwash. If you have any specific concerns about infection, talk to your dentist.

Will I Need a Follow-Up Appointment?

You will need to go back to your dentist’s office to have a permanent filling or crown inserted on the tooth. Your dentist may also want to see you periodically as the root canal heals. They can also discuss ways to prevent root canal issues in the future.
