A gynecologist is a doctor focused on women’s health and who specializes in the reproductive system. Your first appointment will help establish a baseline of health for your reproductive system as well as your general well-being. Here is a guide as to what to expect at the first appointment.

What to Expect at Your Initial Gynecologist Appointment

Why See a Gynecologist?

A woman should have her first annual exam when she is 21 or becomes sexually active. The gynecologist can advise about birth control and family planning, monitor sexual health, and perform routine tests for cervical cancer and STIs. Any questions a woman has about her sexual and reproductive health are confidential; the appointment is a place to be completely open about choices and questions. Doctors can educate you regarding the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, discuss problems arising with menstruation or sexuality, and refer to other practitioners as need be.

Before the Appointment

Schedule the appointment to fall in the middle of your menstrual cycle and don’t have intercourse, wear tampons, or douche two days before the appointment. The gynecologist will want to get a clean cervical swab during the exam. Get information on your family medical history and think about any questions you may have for the doctor regarding birth control, menstruation, or sex.

Upon arrival, a nurse may ask for a urine sample, record weight and height, and take a blood pressure reading. The nurse or doctor will do an intake to record your and your family’s medical history. You may be asked questions about your lifestyle, emotional well-being, diet, and exercise to get a general picture of your current health. You will then be left alone to undress and change into a gown.

The exam itself consists of palpation of breasts and examination of the external genitalia, an internal palpation of reproductive organs, and a PAP smear (which tests for the presence of cervical cancer), where the gynecologist will take a sample of the cells of the cervix. The whole exam takes between 5-10 minutes and may be uncomfortable but not painful. If you do experience pain during any part, be sure to tell the doctor immediately. Your doctor will explain each step of the process and explain where and when they will be touching you and why.

After the Appointment

You will receive a notification of PAP smear results, usually by mail. The gynecologist may suggest a follow-up, depending on lab results and other issues that were raised at the appointment. If no issues arise, most women see their gynecologists once every year or two years.
