As children’s bodies are still developing, their immune systems are not as strong as those of teens and adults. They’re more susceptible to illnesses and infections, including potentially debilitating or life-threatening ones. Fortunately, immunizations significantly reduce this risk. Here are the vaccinations doctors recommend for all children.

A Basic Guide to Childhood Vaccinations

Birth to Two Months

doctorWhen your baby is born, the doctor will recommend the first hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours. However, you can wait if you wish. Some premature or low-weight babies get the shot at one month or upon discharge instead. The second dose of hepatitis B vaccine should be given about one to two months after the first. It takes more than one dose to build up sufficient immunity to the disease.

Two Months

At two months of age, your child will need a wide range of vaccines:

  • the DTaP vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis
  • Hib for Haemophilus influenzae type B
  • IPV for polio
  • PCV for pneumococcal conjugate
  • RV for rotavirus

Your child will need a second dose of some of these vaccines at four months and six months.

Six to 18 Months

At six months and every year after, your child will need a flu vaccine to protect them from influenza, which can be deadly in children. HepA is typically given between one to two years in two doses at least six months apart. In the six to 18-month age range, they’ll also need the following vaccines:

  • HepB
  • DTaP
  • Hib
  • IPV
  • PCV
  • MMR for measles, mumps, and rubella
  • Chickenpox vaccine

Four to Six Years & Beyond

After three years, the frequency with which your child needs vaccines will decline. Between four to six years, they’ll need a DTaP, MMR, IPV, and chickenpox vaccine. Tdap and HPV are recommended for 11 to 12-year-olds.
