Teeth cleaning is a basic foundation of good health—not just your teeth, but your whole body is healthier when your gums are bacteria free. Getting kids to agree... not so easy! Dr. Robert Petrtyl, a general dentist with years of experience treating children, helps kids feel relaxed about oral hygiene. Here are five ways to make it easier to get those kiddos brushing and flossing:

  • Find a song: A simple song that you sing while your child brushes their teeth can decrease your child's resistance to the process because they know exactly how long they will be brushing or flossing: the length of the song. Here's a great one on YouTube.
  • Educate on the result of neglecting teeth: No child needs to see a tooth extraction, but hearing a toned-down version of the repercussions of tooth and gum decay can help children understand why it's so important to stick to a routine.
  • Make a chalkboard chart: A simple checkmark or happy face for every brush and floss is perfect. At the end of the week, your child receives the treat of your choice if they have enough smiling faces on the board!
  • Buy a fun toothbrush: There are Spiderman and Princess toothbrushes, toothbrushes with stickers, toothbrushes that vibrate...Let your child pick the toothbrush that will motivate them to get those teeth sparkling clean!
  • Brush and floss together: Everyone has to brush and floss their teeth, so you might as well do it together! Children who see that their parents take their own dental hygiene seriously are more likely to take theirs seriously too.

Dr. Robert Petrtyl's office of general dentistry has evening and alternate Saturday hours available, and would be happy to assist in keeping your child's teeth strong and healthy. Contact Dr. Petrtyl at (513) 554-4657 to make an appointment.
