Now that it’s fall, you may need to retrieve winter clothing or holiday decor from your storage unit. This can also be an opportune time to clean and organize your unit while the weather is still moderate. If you’re wondering where to start, consider the following organization and cleaning tips to keep your unit clean and easy to access year-round.

How to Clean and Organize Your Self-Storage Unit

1. Write Down Goals

Having a few goals in mind before you visit your self-storage unit ensures it’ll be a productive trip. If you’re planning to bring a few things home, write them down ahead of time so you remember what to bring back with you. Also, if you made an inventory when you first moved in, bring it along so you can easily refer to it.

2. Do a Preliminary Cleaning

storageBefore opening up any containers, sweep the floors, wipe the dust from the tops of boxes, and clear away any spiderwebs from the corners. This will make it easier for you to go through your items without worrying about dirt or dust getting into the boxes.

3. Use Smaller Boxes

Even if your current boxes are still in good shape, you may want to switch them out for smaller ones if you are planning on moving them or their contents again soon. While large sizes seem more convenient, they’re best for lightweight items such as down comforters. When they’re filled with heavy items like books, they’re much more difficult to move.

4. Rotate Your Items

Rearrange your boxes so that they're accessible according to the season. For example, right now, keep fall and winter items near the front. When you return any fall or winter items to the unit, place them near the back, and keep spring items more easily accessible.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Get Rid of Things

Reassess what you have. If you've had a storage unit for years and the same items are practically permanent residents, ask yourself whether they can be relocated. For items that are still in good condition, consider donating them; if they’re past their prime, recycle them or throw them away.
