How a person chooses to dress says a lot about them. This is perhaps no truer than in the legal world, where what an individual wears to their court appearance can set the stage for the entire chain of events that follows. For this reason, it is crucial to dress appropriately for court; below are a few tips to help you make smart clothing choices before going in front of a judge or jury.

Men

Courtrooms are conservative places. Under no circumstances are shorts, T-shirts, hats, flipflops, or torn, ripped, or soiled clothing ever advisable. In general, consider dressing for a court appearance like dressing for a job interview in a corporate field. For men, this means long pants with a belt, a collared shirt that is tucked in, and preferably a tie. Always wear both shoes and socks, and if you have a blazer or suit jacket that goes with what you're wearing, be sure to put it on before walking into the courtroom.

Also, be neatly groomed. If you're usually clean-shaven, shave before your court appearance. If you have facial hair, make sure it is neat and trimmed. Comb and style your hair. Those with visible tattoos should aim to wear clothes that cover them, and remove all visible piercings before entering the courthouse.

Women

court appearancesFor women, dress as modestly and professionally as possible. No miniskirts and no revealing clothing like halter tops or short, midriff-baring shirts. A long skirt, dress, or long pants are excellent options, and a blouse, dress shirt, or sweater are all acceptable. Shoes are of course a must, preferably closed-toe.

Brush and style your hair, and if it is particularly long or unruly, consider wearing it pulled back or in a conservative hairstyle. Go easy on the makeup and opt for a more natural look. As with men, make certain all tattoos are covered and take out any visible piercings (earrings are usually acceptable for women) before walking into the courthouse. Use little, if any, perfume as many people are allergic or sensitive to strong scents.
