If you've reached the point in your relationship where you're thinking about buying a ring for your significant other, you'll want to learn about the engagement ring options. There's a lot more to know besides how much you're planning to spend and which store you're buying it from. You also want to consider details like the cut and carat and who to consult when selecting a ring. Here are a few facts to understand before making this purchase.

3 Tips for Buying an Engagement Ring

1. Know the Four C's

The term "cut" refers to the level of shine, or sparkle, a diamond has. A diamond's cut is graded anywhere from excellent to poor. Carat refers to the weight of a diamond. Most engagement rings are one carat—200 milligrams—but can go much higher, which also increases their price. Color, which is graded on a scale from D to Z, measures how colorless a diamond is—the most expensive and coveted have no color and are perfectly clear—with D being the best and Z representing diamonds that may have a strong yellow tint. Clarity measures the flawlessness of the diamond: how many flecks, fissures, and lines are present inside the diamond.

2. Consult Friends

Reach out to close friends and ask them questions that will help inform your decision, including the diamond's shape, which ranges from round and oval to princess and marquise.

3. Shop Around

Shopping for diamonds is similar to shopping for cars. It pays to shop around, stopping by as many different jewelry stores as you can to get the broadest sense of prices and selection possible.
