The look of a classic car coming down the street makes almost anyone stop and stare in awe and admiration. Whether you are on your first or tenth antique car purchase, there is plenty you can do to keep the vintage vehicle looking pristine. The right care is especially important if you plan to display the vehicle at the next local auto show or intend to sell it in a few years.

How to Maintain an Antique Car

1. Protect the Car From the Elements

Shield your antique car from fading ultraviolet rays, as well as damaging rain, snow, sleet, and hail, by storing it in a garage. Keep the vintage vehicle covered to avoid dust buildup and run a dehumidifier in the garage to prevent excess humidity. Moisture creates rust in the car’s undercarriage.

2. Wash & Wax It by Hand

antique carsCarefully wash your antique car by hand at least once a month and apply wax about every six months to preserve the paint. Clean the entire exterior, including the undercarriage, especially during the winter when road salt levels are high. Vacuum and wipe down the interior to prevent debris buildup and corrosion problems, as dirt retains moisture that can seep through the floor into the undercarriage. Never take an antique car to a washing center because the force of the spray can damage the paint.

3. Keep the Fluids Topped Off

Change the oil regularly and keep the brake, windshield wiper, and transmission fluids topped off. This is important in any vehicle, especially those with older parts and components. Lubrication prevents heat and friction that wears out the engine, transmission, and other parts faster.

4. Drive Your Car

Drive your antique car at least a few times a month to prevent fluid deterioration. Cars that sit too long often feature corroded batteries and fuel pumps that stop working.

5. Get It Professionally Inspected

Schedule professional inspections and restorations to ensure your classic vehicle remains in excellent condition. Restoration experts have the experience, knowledge, tools, and equipment to work on vintage and antique cars and happily make recommendations to keep your model running and looking great.
