As the weather begins to get colder, it’s time to start thinking about pulling the boat out of water and preparing it for storage. This is an important process because winter temperatures and elements can be brutal on these vehicles if they are left unprotected. To ensure yours is ready to go next spring and summer, here are a few tips to get it ready for its downtime.

How to Prepare Your Boat for Storage

1. Change the Oil & Coolant System

Water gets everywhere on a boat. To prevent the liquid from corroding the engine while the vessel sits in storage, change areas where it could sit. This primarily concerns the oil and coolant system tanks. Flush these areas and add new coolant, oil, and an oil filter, so no water or other harmful particles remain.

2. Lubricate Moving Parts

boatAs the boat sits still for months, moving parts in the engine and on board can become stiff. To prevent any mobility issues later on, try spraying fogging oil into the carburetor or through the spark plugs while the engine is turning over. You can also add a grease to the steering wheel and control mechanisms, particularly near joints, to ensure they move smoothly in the spring.

3. Wash, Wax, & Cover

After numerous days and weeks spent on the water, the boat’s body has probably developed some grime. Thoroughly wash it before adding a layer of wax, which will help to fend off dirt and dust accumulation while it sits. Also, add a cover to keep the interior protected from elements, especially if you will be storing the vehicle outside.
