Gum disease is one of the more common oral health conditions. Fortunately, it is relatively easy to treat, especially when diagnosed early. Since some of the first signs can be subtle, though, it’s essential to visit a dentist every six months for a comprehensive exam. If your dentist does detect gum disease at one of these appointments, you can expect to undergo one of the following treatments.

The 3 Stages of Gum Disease & How to Treat Them

1. Gingivitis

gum diseaseGingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease and is characterized by red, swollen, and tender gums that bleed during brushing and flossing. It is possible to treat gingivitis and reverse any damage it has caused by undergoing an intensive dental cleaning known as scaling and root planing.

2. Periodontitis

Without treatment, gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. As plaque accumulates on the gumline and calcifies into tartar, the gums become more tender and inflamed until they eventually start pulling away from the teeth. This leaves little pockets between the gums and teeth, where more bacteria, plaque, and tartar can accumulate. Treatment includes scaling, root planing, and antibiotics, which will control any bacterial infections. Soft tissue grafts may also be necessary to replace the receding gums.

3. Advanced Periodontitis

If left untreated, periodontitis can eventually result in tooth loss. Depending on the severity of the condition, the teeth may fall out on their own, or tooth extraction may be necessary to clear up any infections. Once the condition has stabilized, it may be possible to replace the missing teeth with dental implants or dentures.
