Many items you don’t use every day can be safely and securely stored behind your garage door. But there are a few objects and materials that aren’t well suited for the temperature changes and other conditions in your garage. Here are a few items to keep in the house or find other storage solutions for.

What Not to Store in Your Garage

1. Photos, Documents, & Paintings

Garage DoorsThese items are often important to preserve—and your garage just isn’t the place to do it. Fluctuations between heat and cold can damage photos and paintings, while dampness and pests threaten any documents or pictures you have on hand.

2. Food

When you store food in your garage, you run the risk of attracting pests—and a garage door likely isn’t enough to keep them out. Insects and mice are hard to get rid of, especially once they have access to your food storage.

3. Cardboard

While it may seem convenient as a storage container, cardboard shouldn’t stay in your garage long-term, as pests and dampness can damage it and cause it to break down or tear. Instead, use plastic storage bins or drawers.

4. Fuel

Gas, propane, and other hazardous materials present a significant risk of fire or explosion—especially when your garage heats up in the summer. It’s much smarter to keep these items away from your house whenever possible.

5. Clothes

Fabric is often delicate and sensitive to temperature and moisture. If you want to keep this clothing, it’s better off in the house; otherwise, you can sell or donate it to free up closet space.
