For many landowners, few installations are more important than an irrigation well. From maintaining landscaping to watering crops, a steady supply of water will make all of the difference in achieving your desired outcomes. Of course, installing and maintaining a new irrigation well requires a bit more than simply deciding you want one on your property. Here’s what you need to know to get the job done right.

Installation Preparation

A well installation isn’t something that is completed overnight. Before you even begin work, you’ll need to get a permit to install an irrigation well on your property. You can generally expect about two months to pass from when you first start planning to when the installation work is complete.

A contractor will help you with obtaining the necessary permits, as well as finding the right location for the installation. By drilling test holes and identifying areas that aren’t too close to your neighbors, they’ll help you pick the right spot for the well.

Ongoing Maintenance

irrigation wellMost irrigation wells are expected to last 30 to 40 years after the installation—but only if you provide proper maintenance. To keep your well operating properly, you should first keep detailed records of its performance, making particular note of the water source’s depletion rate. If water depletes too quickly, you are more likely to experience mineral deposit buildup and other issues. Monitoring your well will allow you to take action before the issue gets out of hand.

Also, chlorinate the well each year. This is typically done in the fall after you no longer need to irrigate your yard. This practice will kill any bacteria that might otherwise grow in the well water during the winter.
